Global economic leaders have reached a final declaration at the G20 summit in New Delhi. However, the language concerning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has sparked geopolitical tensions, has undergone a softening since the leaders’ previous meeting.
The consensus statement from this year’s G20 summit in India was released by India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs a day before the summit’s conclusion. India, which played a pivotal role in securing the final communique, emphasized the rigorous negotiations that took place. Amitabh Kant, India’s representative at the summit, credited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for driving the resolution.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Oleg Nikolenko expressed gratitude to countries that advocated for stronger language but suggested that the communique was not something to be proud of.
Indian Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar emphasized that the G20 primarily focuses on economic cooperation, suggesting that other forums, such as the G7, are better suited for addressing social issues.
The G20 communiqué also called for the resumption of grain, foodstuffs, and fertilizer shipments from Russia and Ukraine to support people in Africa and other developing regions. It highlighted issues like gender equality, counterterrorism, anti-money laundering efforts, and the development of digital technology and green infrastructure.
